5 Reasons To Date A Girl With An Eating Disorder A Response From A Person With Common Sense

This past Wednesday 13, November 2013, a very ignorant person decided to publish an article named “5 Reasons To Date A Girl With An Eating Disorder”. Here is my humble opinion on this article written by “Tuthmosis”.

According to “Tuthmosis”, nothing screams white-girl problems louder than a good old-fashioned eating disorder. Specifying that his list doesn´t apply to “emotional eaters, food addicts and fatties with no self-control”, also mentioning that eating disorders are a “luxury reserved for only the most privileged members of the female race”.

Dear “Tuthmosis”, I encourage you to inform yourself as ignorance, such as yours, plays a big part on what causes an eating disorder.

First of all, an eating disorder is defined as a dangerous mental illness, not a lifestyle choice, a diet gone wrong or a “luxury”.  The American Psychology Association defines eating disorders as abnormal eating habits that can threaten your health or even your life. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. They are not “reserved” for anyone, an estimated 10-15% of people with anorexia or bulimia are male, up to 24 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder (anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder) in the U.S., for more statistics and facts you can check the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders.

I personally do not care if your main goal with this “opinion” is to have more visits, create controversy, and attract attention. Use something else, not a life threatening mental disease, INFORM yourself, and try to attract attention with FACTS. How desperate for attention or how ignorant can you be to write this article and publish it?

Now, the ridiculous list with a proper response:

1. Her obsession over her body will improve her overall looks.
Wrong. The obsession over her body, if it is not treated and is encouraged by people like you, will drive her to a body weight so unhealthy a number of complications and consequences will develop. I was kind enough to list some of them for you (from the Academy of Eating Disorders):
Semi-starvation in anorexia nervosa can affect most organ systems. Physical signs and symptoms (in addition to the lack of menstrual periods in women) can include constipation, cold intolerance, abnormally low heart rate, abdominal distress, dryness of skin, hypotension, and fine body hair (lanugo). Anorexia nervosa causes anemia, kidney dysfunction, cardiovascular problems, changes in brain structure, and osteoporosis (i.e., inadequate bone calcium).
Self-induced vomiting seen in both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa can lead to swelling of salivary glands, electrolyte and mineral disturbances, and dental enamel erosion. Use of ipecac to induce vomiting can lead to extreme muscle weakness, including heart muscle weakness. Laxative abuse can lead to long lasting disruptions of normal bowel functioning. Rarer complications are tearing the esophagus, rupturing of the stomach, and life-threatening irregularities of the heart rhythm.

2. She costs less money.
She, as in a person. People do not “cost” money.

3. She’s fragile and vulnerable.
This statement is very subjective. If by fragile and vulnerable you mean sick, then you may be right. Taking advantage of the insecurities a person may have to benefit yourself just displays your own “fragile and vulnerable” self.

4. Probably has money of her own.
Again, please inform yourself so you can learn that these type of mental illnesses can be present on anybody.

5. She’s better in bed. “A girl with an eating disorder has just the right cocktail of pent-up insecurity, neuroses, and daddy issues to ensure that your whole building knows every time you’re beating it up.”
This just makes me feel sorry for you and your lack of confidence, I really recommend you to look for professional psychological help.

And to conclude my opinion based on trusted sources. I want to share with you, dear “Tuthmosis”, some vocabulary words with their definitions that may help you on your daily life.
